Speaker Sessions
Get Off the Curriculum Carousel! Rethinking the Reasons Your Child is Underperforming in Reading
(Unique Learning Track)
n this workshop, clinical and educational audiologist Dr. Jody Jedlicka will share how weaknesses in your instruction or reading curriculum may not be the root cause of your child’s poor reading performance. Instead, Dr. Jody will share how cognitive skills underlie the ability to think and learn effectively, and that strengthening cognitive skills may be a better choice than changing curriculum…again. Expertly weaving science with stories of hope and a fun brain training demonstration, she will ensure attendees leave with a better understanding of what to look for in reading instruction, and how brain strengthening exercises can improve reading skills.
Understanding How Auditory Processing Affects Learning
(Unique Learner)
Ever feel like your child hears every word you say—yet nothing seems to stick? Or that simple instructions turn into long, frustrating moments of confusion? For many homeschool families, the missing link isn’t effort or attitude; it’s auditory processing. In this eye-opening workshop, audiologist Dr. Jody Jedlicka explains what’s really happening in your child’s brain when listening and learning feel harder than they should. Whether your child often says, “Wait—what?” or struggles during read-alouds, phonics, or multi-step directions, this session brings clarity and hope. You’ll learn how auditory processing affects reading, spelling, memory, and focus; why bright kids can struggle with listening-heavy tasks; what warning signs to watch for; and practical steps and targeted interventions you can begin using right away.
